Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Oasis

If you love being outdoors and can’t stand the idea of packing up your outdoor living space after the all-too-short summer months, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, planning an outdoor living space can be a challenge, especially if you find yourself living in the harsher Canadian climate. Luckily, there are a few simple additions that you can make to extend your outdoor living space from a seasonal spot to a year-round oasis.

Bringing the Heat

Living in a colder climate, we know that it isn’t long after the kids are back-to-school and the leaves begin to fall, that the cold begins to roll in. For most of us this translates into nights rather spent indoors than face the uncomfortable cold without heat. Fortunately, there are a number of options to help keep you warm.

Patio Heaters

Warm up your patio with the addition of a gas, propane or electric freestanding or a wall- or ceiling-mounted heater. Freestanding heaters offer portability, esthetics and come in a wide range of styles and heating capacities to meet your design needs. This option tends to take up more space than it’s mounted counterpart, and may tip over on windier days. If you think this will be a problem than a mounted heater may be for you. Eliminating your safety and   space issues, this option is mounted directly into your exterior wall or ceiling and cannot be removed. Find them at your local Canadian Tire, Home Depot, or any other independent outdoor home and leisure retailer.

Outdoor Fireplace

Used alone or in conjunction with your patio heaters, an outdoor fireplace, fire pit, or chiminea will provide warmth and ambience to any outdoor living space. You can choose a freestanding or built-in design, in addition to primary fuel sources of either wood or gas.

Covering Up

There is nothing worse than inviting your friends and family over for beverages by the fire only to cancel your plans due to rain and snow. Providing your guests, patio, grill, fireplace, and furniture with protection from the elements of the North means you can extend your season outdoors and keep entertaining into the colder months. There are a number of options to choose from including a pergola, awning or canopy, all of which help to cover your space while completing the look of a fully functional outdoor living space.

Lighting The Way

As it begins to get darker earlier on in the day, lighting becomes a practical and aesthetic necessity for any year-round outdoor living space. For effective, environmentally friendly options choose solar path lighting or outdoor posts and wall scones.  If you are looking for accents go with spotlights or floodlights, and make sure to choose those that are rated for outdoor use. Regardless of your choice, keep in mind that each type of lighting has a different function and a combination is often the most effective.

Going Above and Beyond

If you have already implemented some of our recommendations than you might be looking to spice up your outdoor living space by going above and beyond the basics. The possibilities for accessories are endless, which means that whichever extra you choose, make sure it translates to your ultimate goal: enjoying the outdoor living space you have created. Some of the more extravagant options include outdoor televisions, kitchens, or bars while fans, outdoor beds, or even a portable sound system like an iHome provide a special feel at a lower cost.

Depending on which additions you decide to include in your outdoor oasis, remember to take care of and prolong their lifetime by bringing them inside or covering them when the weather requires.
